Nations of the world should increase protection on social and economic rights of migrants

(I won the best speaker for the motion for this debate.)

On the night of Thursday, 7th January 2010, two migrant workers were shot with air guns in the town of Rosarno in Southern Italy. This turned out to become a two day violent clash.
Good afternoon to one and all. The motion today is “Nations of the world should increase protection on economic and social rights of migrants” and I, Chaitali Wadhwa of pink house, stand for the motion. In a number of separate incidents in Italy, two immigrants were reportedly beaten with iron bars, five deliberately run over and a further two injured by shot gun pellets. Another case-Canada and Guatemala have agreed to the international Trade Union Confederation under which the authorities of the host nation keep the passports of migrants, who are not allowed to contact or even approach trade unions nor may look for work.
The state of migrants is appalling all of over the world. They face harsh living conditions, discrimination and low wages. They lack safety nets and suffer disproportionately in times of economic hardship.
The UN convention on the Protection on the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families was signed in 1990 and came into force in 2003. The convention represents a comprehensive international treaty regarding the protection of migrant workers rights. Many nations have signed it but most are countries of origin of migrants.
It has been understood, that nations should increase the protection on the rights of migrants. The question is how. UN Secretary General Mr. Ban-ki Moon says that basic social and economic rights should be provided by each and every country.
The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) has given solutions to the problem faced by migrants, asylum seekers and refugees. According to FIDH, it is necessary to ensure that laws of migration allow for work permits to be issued to migrants themselves instead of to employers. Effective investigation, prosecution and punishment of employers responsible for violations of the rights of migrants must be ensured. In accordance with the FIDH proposal, I strongly believe that increased protection should be granted to migrant unless by all countries.
I would like to end by quoting Ban KI moon “Migration is not just a journey of people; it is a journey of policy”. Because in the end, policies and laws are really about people and values.”
